Porsche: From the beginning…
It started in 1948 when Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry recruited 200 workers with the intention of building exceptional sports cars and racecars. With engineering credentials that included a stint with Daimler-Benz, Ferdinand brought a half-century of experience and innovation to this new venture. His son helped grow the new company, starting with designing the 356, the first Porsche sports car, which sported a slightly-pumped up Beetle engine.
History was made in 1964 with the introduction of the legendary Porsche 911. At the time, this was a futuristic rear-engine marvel. Evolving over three decades, this iconic Porsche included the 911 S, the 911 Turbo, the 911 Cabriolet and the first all-wheel-drive 911 Carrera 4. In 2017, the millionth 911 rolled of Porsche’s production line.
Porsche pursued racing almost immediately and has won an estimated 24,000 auto races throughout the world, including over 50 class wins at Le Mans.
Porsche Evolution
The ‘70s witnessed the creation of various front-engine models, beginning with the four-cylinder 924 in 1976 as well as the unrelated 928, which sported the company’s first V-8 engine in 1978. Following came the more powerful and advanced 944 and 944 Turbo, then the 968 in the early ‘90s. After retiring the 968 and 928 in 1995, Porsche developed the rear-engine 911 and mid-engine Boxster.
On January 31, Porsche invited the public inside its Porsche Museum for the first time. Located in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the museum is distinguished as one of the most impressive buildings built by Porsche.
The Porsche Emblem
The origination of the Porsche crest is a matter of disagreement between North Americans and Germans. North Americans claim that American Porsche distributor Max Hoffman met with Ferdinand Porsche’s son Ferry at a New York restaurant, where Max stated that Porsche needed a visual ‘brand’ mark or mascot. Ferry sketched an idea on a napkin and the rest is history. Germans insist that the logo was designed by Franz Xaver Reimspies: an engineer who worked with Ferdinand.
The melding of two designs, the Porsche Emblem incorporates Stuttgart’s coat of arms, which is also the city seal. The state crest of Wurttemberg is where Stuttgart is located and inspired the antlers and red and black stripes. Even the colors have a distinct history and meaning. The black was originally embossed rather than painted. The red was maroon/claret because of a shortage of ink and colored paper in post-war Germany. The yellow contains an orange hue that reflects the Wurttemberg-Hohenzollern state colors.
