The Audi brand is truly the singular vision of one man: August Horch. A former production manager for Karl Benz, August dreamed of building cars that reflected his personal flair for design and innovative engineering.

With 15 others, August formed a company in Germany with 15 others, producing its first car in 1901. Through a series of events and unforeseen changes in 1909, the Board of Directors forced August from the company, despite his being a major contributor to its successful launch.

Undeterred, August established yet another business, choosing Audi as its name, as Horch was already in use. Audi is Latin for ‘Hear’ (Horch).

In 1910, Audi released its very first car known as the ‘Type A’. Featuring a 4-cylinder 4-stroke engine, the Type A represented Horchs’ vision and resulted in the production of 140 Type A vehicles.

The Type B and Type C quickly followed as Audi built on the success of its first model. Soon Horsch put his vehicles in races. For three years in a row, Audi won the prestigious International Austrian Alpine Run. German drivers took notice but World War I nearly put the company out of business. However, following the war, Audi rose from the proverbial ashes.

In 1921, Audi became the first German car manufacturer to present a production car (Audi Type K) with left-handed drive. Considered to provide a better view of oncoming traffic, the left-hand drive became dominant in the auto market.

The eventual merger with DKW, Horch and Wanderer was the inspiration for the four-ring badge emblem.

Today, Audi is regarded as one of the most coveted vehicle brands across the globe. Through war, evolving global demand and ever-increasing consumer expectations, Audi has survived and thrived.
